Given the social and health context of sub-Saharan countries, the need arises to implement different methods to improve the health and lifestyle of the most vulnerable populations. After 5 years of experience in the field, where, hand in hand with different local communities, the most prevalent problems of these sectors are analyzed; The idea was born of generating a link with the community through agriculture in the rural communities themselves to promote and instill solid foundations of healthy nutrition. The project will take place in the town of Sichili in the western province of Zambia.
This is achieved through the creation of a school garden, from which different micro units will be reproduced in the surrounding communities. In this way, the beneficiary population will have access to new techniques and materials to reproduce what they learn in their own local gardens.
In addition, it is the objective of the project that, through professionals and people trained in health, a healthy sense is given to what they learn, in addition to periodically evaluating the progress of the families involved.
Through health professionals, the impact on nutrition will be measured with the use of specific evaluation tools. This will be complemented with workshops for the production, handling, conservation and preparation of the different products obtained from the garden.
The project consists of several stages, the first and main one at this time is the nutrition diagnosis of the population by the health area volunteers (doctor and nutritionist) and the start of the school garden by agronomist volunteers.
In Zambia we have two local partners that help us in communication and management with the community, these are the Diocese of Livingston and the CHAZ (Churches Health Association of Zambia), an entity that connects different mission hospitals with the Zambian Ministry of Health .
In parallel to this project in Zambia, there is a volunteer dentist who will evaluate the possibility of developing a dental project in cooperation with the Dentists in Tanzania foundation.
